Chapter 15

Frank Evans paced the floor as heavy rain fell, hail pulverized the roof and he prayed that none of the hail would smash the windows. The others stood in the kitchen, in the hallway and in the living room not quite sure what they should do. Such storms only happened in nightmares, not in real life, he told himself several times before he realized this was really happening. If the storm broke windows or took the roof off the house, they would have another problem. They would be exposed to the elements, and to the vicious creatures that might be outside waiting to get in.

Now they had another problem, as if they needed anything else to make their day. Melinda was out there in the storm searching for Brady and they had to do something to help her.

Jan stood quietly with her arm around Claire’s shoulders trying to comfort her since they had first discovered that Melinda was missing. “We should not have left her alone for a moment,” Claire said while wiping tears from her cheeks. “I should have known she would try something like this. She was completely frantic.”

“Mom, can I go looking for her?” Joel was clearly upset as were the other kids and Jan knew it. They’d been through a lot in one day, more than they’d been through in their entire lives.

“We’ll take care of it, Joel,” she said trying to sound passive, except even she could detect the fear in her own voice. “Look, why don’t you take Pete and the two girls in the front room and watch the doors and windows. If something breaks or anything happens, you let us know. Will you do that for me, Joel?”

“Sure, Mom,” he said as he walked toward the front room. The other kids followed him. “Let’s make sure they don’t get by the front door,” he said picking up a baseball bat.

Jan walked over to Frank and put her arms around him. “I’m sorry, honey,” she said. “I didn’t know this was going to happen.”

“Not your fault, Jan,” he replied. “We’ll just have to deal with it. The only thing is I don’t know what we’re going to do. We can’t do much until that hail quits. We’d be dead before we got off the deck. It’s going to be hard to find her in the dark. We’ll do our best, though. Say, why don’t you dig out those candles, lamps, kerosene and flashlights you packed away in those boxes? Do you know where they are?”

“Sure,” Jan assured him. “They’re in the spare bedroom with your office equipment. Jessica and me will get them out. Do you think the power will fail?”

“It wouldn’t surprise me,” Frank whispered to her. “Don’t make a big deal out of it, if you get my meaning.”

“I understand,” she said kissing him on his cheek. She walked away to get the candles and Jessica and Claire followed her.

Cecil had locked the back door and put a chair against it.
